feelin’ vintage.

Vine Yoke Cardigan by Ysolda Teague finished out of some stashed Berroco Ultra Alpaca. A few modifications but fit seems to be okay once I shrink it in the wash!

I think many people have seen or even maybe knit the Vine Yoke Cardigan from Twist Collective 2009. This is one of those sweater patterns that I’ve had a love-hate relationship with for a long time: I love the design, don’t love the finished fit. It’s actually the reason I recently downloaded Amy Herzog’s most recent Craftsy class, Sweater Modifications for Custom Fit. I am sick of ill-fitting sweaters! That aside, this actually turned out okay. It’s too big and I need bigger buttons to fill out the button holes slightly more but it’s actually quite cute. The only thing I’m tempted to do is throw it back in the wash and then shrink it in the dryer for a few minutes. I think it would tighten up the fit perfectly. Some of you are cringing, I know, but I’ll give you an update on how it goes (it’ll be fine, I promise!).

I made a few modifications ::

  • Smaller button holes compared to the pattern and fewer of them (8 instead of the called for many more in pattern),
  • Cast off and cast on for the arms, rather than the provisional cast on and grafting. This gives the arms more structure due to the uber stretch of garter and I don’t mind seaming at all. I quite like the results of seaming compared to grafting. And,
  • Knit 3 on the lower hems of the arms and sweater to prevent curling of the lace at the bottom.

The back of the sweater is really gorgeous with the vine lace pattern. It puckers, just like every other version out there, but it actually lies quite nicely and I’m not too fussed about it.

Will this get a ton of wear? I’m not sure. If I can shrink it down then I think so. If not, gifting it is definitely not out of the question!

Happy knitting :)
