It’s been a while since I posted about a finished object and this one is just too cute not to post about! I made it in about 2 hours from start to finish, enjoyed every minute and just can’t stop looking at it. I think there’s something really fulfilling sometimes about these quick n’ dirty projects that we make with no expectations. The yarn had been bought last winter for a toque for Norah and I just kept putting off making it. I hate knitting with super bulky yarn … hate the colours … and just had no motivation to work with it. The thing is though, I knew it would bring her a lot of joy. Also, I knew once I got it onto the needles (or hook, in this case), that it would be really fast to complete and I’d enjoy it. That’s exactly what happened but it was the getting to it that took time. I’m glad I finally just ‘cast on’ and worked on it. I’ve ordered a purple faux-fur pom pom for the top, which I’m waiting for and will add photos once it’s completely finished with the pom.

I modified the hat to compensate for the incredibly bulky yarn that she’d picked out. I started with the round of 9DC that the {free} pattern calls for and increased from there. In the end, I only finished about 3 of the increase rounds before continuing to build the body of the hat without anymore increases.
For the ‘ribbing’, I kept trying it on her and worked only two rows of rib, which ended up being just over 2 inches (the length for the adult hat called for in the pattern). It also means there’s room for her to grow into the hat as it’s slightly too big.

Norah is over the moon about her toque and while we wait for the pom to arrive in the mail, she’s been wearing this in the mornings to school. It’s warm, soft and bright – which is perfect for her personality and comfort. She can also put it on herself since it’s slightly stiff from the bulkiness of the yarn.
