On & Off the Needles & Bobbins

Works in Progress – Spinning

Kinfolk Organic Polwarth

  • combination spindle spun & wheel spun, minimal prep – stripped once and spun!
  • continuous backwards draft, worsted

Works in Progress – Knitting

Montana Mountain Cowl by Andrea Mowry

  • using my Hallowe’en Rolags handspun – vlogs of making these rolags here and part II here
  • Berroco Ultra Alpaca Light in Pitch Black (4245), held double
  • striped vs. blended project – note the differences between the two yarns
  • barber-poling vs. heathering in the finished yarns

Merinda by Ambah O’Brien

  • Disdero Ranch Shetland 2-ply, fingering weight
  • Sanjo Silks in Tasar, Peduncle, red & white Eri, etc
  • 3.5mm / US 4

Albini by Orlane Sucche

  • Disdero Ranch 100% Shetland 3-ply
  • woollen prep – pin-drafted roving, spun semi-worsted (continuous backwards w/o smoothing)
  • swatch gauge: 19 stitches x 4 inches
  • ripped majority of the sweater out over the weekend: cocoon shaping of the sides meant the hips didn’t allow the sweater to close for my personal measurements and sleeves were waaay too big

Finished Objects – Knitting

Love Note by Tin Can Knits

  • Small Bird Workshop 80/20 CVM/Mohair pin-drafted roving (handspun page here)
  • Spun on Ashford e-Spinner 3 – continuous backward draft, full draft & minimal smoothing

For October, you told us about your spinning plans for the rest of the year? What are you looking forward to learning, exploring and making?Random Number generator from Ravelry & YouTube: Out of 47 comments, comment #25 won! Jan (@badlydrawngirl) shares: My spinning plans for the next few months are to spin up some of the fibre stash that I have been dyeing up recently. I’m hoping to get a sweater, or a cardigan with the green/blue BFL and perhaps a colour work yoke for another sweater.

For November, please tell us about your favourite item(s) you’ve made based on an emotion or feeling.

Handspun Knitting

Sanne shares in the Slack channel #sweaterspin: I finished my poppy sweater knitted in the yarn I spun during tdf2020. It’s durable Shetland so it’ll last forever (I hope). It’s going to be a while before my next 3mm 4-strand colour work project!

Zero to Hero

Christine (@christine65) shares progress:I’ve finished my sweater yarn (singles spun on a drop spindle, yarn plyed on my Ashford Traveller wheel). I ended up with about 1700m of oatmeal BFL/silk, 380m of Amethyst BFL and 335m of Olive green Shetland. Grist for the oatmeal is 3596m/kg (1784 YPP), the amethyst BFL is 3940m/kg (1954 YPP) and the olive shetland is 3558m/kg (1765 YPP). I’m going to knit a yoked sweater from the oatmeal yarn, using either the purple or green as the contrast, but will choose which one after I’ve chosen the pattern as the purple is much higher contrast than the green. Pattern contenders at the moment are Stasis, Noux, Branches & Buds Pullover or something from Jennifer Steingass or Isabell Kraemer.

Judi (@creekcrafter) shares: Not sure I would call this epic but I am happy with the spin and finished item. I spun a braid of merino/silk/nylon into a 3-strand opposing ply yarn for these – my first attempt at this type of 3-ply and at spinning sock yarn. I feel like this yarn has some strength to it, both with the structure and the silk/nylon content. Knit toe-up, two-at-a-time using fish lips kiss heel and adding some purl detail for fun. No real pattern followed – I just kind of make socks up as I go, as I am a rather odd fit. Thanks for this thread – it is helping to push me to plan for projects and use my handspun, rather than stuff it in a stash bin.
